What is the Future of Work Anyways?

Although there are numerous "future of work" topics, most of them are about hybrid work or remote work and do not clearly explain what the "future of work" really is. Allison Baum Gates, a Venture Capitalist, explains the "future of work" as everything related to how jobs get done. That includes who does them, what they involve, when, where, how, and why they get done.

You must accept the new reality, and ask yourself what if pandemic returns and employment does not exist tomorrow? This is what happened to more than 225 million people around the world who lost their jobs during the pandemic. 65 million unemployed were in Europe alone. 

How would the future of work look like?

During the past two years, we observed a never-before-seen trend. Analyzing global trends and user behaviors, we concluded that the future of work is a combination of Digital, Skills, Freelance, and Employee Experience (same as customer/user experience). 


Technology has the power to make today's jobs obsolete tomorrow. And the COVID pandemic demonstrated that it can be done even faster. Where would you earn money? And most importantly, how are you going to earn money? The answer is - online. Say, you are a gym owner. You have a limited room capacity, meaning you cannot give classes to more than 20 people at a time. What if a new wave occurs in September? You will lose your single revenue stream again. The answer, go digital and increase your reach 2x, 5x, 10x without any extra costs. So even if the pandemic is over, you will have multiple revenue streams available to you. 


Everything we see around us is based on data: new fancy t-shirt offer that fits you exactly as you want it; your dream car produced by a car manufacturer; new app feature that simplifies app usage, etc. All predictable tasks and tasks that are repeatable are now automated. And if in some companies it is still not automated, trust us, sooner or later it will be. When that would happen, employers will be looking for skills that are into strategy, community management, sales, R&D, creativity, training/coaching, management, and IT. You better start improving those skills already today if you do not want to wake up one day and realize you are "outdated". 


COVID-19 accelerated the rapid digitalization of everything. Offline behaviors are changing to online behaviors, and new needs emerging creating a lot of opportunities for self-employed to offer their offline services online. These services include nutritionists, dietitians, attorneys, life coaches, psychologists, pediatricians, personal assistance, and so on. Employee Experience

Whether you are a C-level executive, team lead, VP, or an entrepreneur who just started his startup, we all felt how the "new normal" added extra layers of pressure to "working from home" mode. And the biggest of them was the increasing level of stress.

“It is a CEO and Board imperative to make sure employees and their families have access to the resources and expertise they need to support their mental wellbeing. The stakes are high and employers are working hard to get it right,” said Michael Ross, former CHRO of Visa. 

Despite many offering greater flexibility to employees during and after the pandemic, the key role of keeping employees happy will be determined by the "employee remote wellbeing" metrics. According to the Pew Research Center data, over half of employees would prefer working from home. This means that employers would have to develop modern employee benefits options that would reduce the stress and pressure from their employees.
